Navigate to Competitor Groups
To access Competitor Groups, click the Settings (⚙️) icon located in the bottom-left corner of your Adthena account, then under Data Management → Google data, select Competitor Groups from the menu.
Competitor Groups table
The page opens on the Competitor groups tab, showing every group you've created: its name, how many competitors it contains, and which location(s) it's scoped to. Use the Edit (pencil) and Delete (bin) icons on the right of each row to manage a group.
Two other tabs sit alongside Competitor groups:
- Named competitors – your built-in shortlist of key rivals
- Ignored competitors – your built-in list of domains excluded from competitive data
Note: Groups come in two kinds. Standard groups are ones you create yourself — you can rename, delete, and edit their members, and they're listed in the main management table. Built-in groups (Named Competitors and Ignored Competitors) are platform-managed — you edit their members from their own tabs, and they never appear in the management table.
Create a new group
When setting up your first competitor group, we recommend adding ten of your top competitors along with your own website. Including your domain means it appears alongside your competitors when applying competitor group filters throughout the application, so your data shows up in the charts and you can compare your performance across different markets.
- Click Create group at the top of the page.
- In the Create competitor group dialog, enter a name in the Group name field and click New group.
The group's page opens straight away, even before it has any competitors. It starts on the In group tab with an empty state — "No competitors in this group yet" — and no location assigned until you add a competitor.
- Click Add competitors. In the dialog:
- Type a single domain into the field and click Add.
- Or paste multiple domains (one per line) into the Paste multiple domains box and click Add pasted domains.
- Or drag and drop a CSV file, or click Choose CSV, under Upload a CSV of domains.
- If you're uploading a CSV, please ensure your file:
- Is in UTF-8 format
- Contains a single column with one domain per row
- Does not include URL headers or paths
Adding a domain, pasting a list, or uploading a CSV all run through the same server-side cleaning: leading www. and m. subdomains are stripped, and invalid, made-up, or duplicate domains are dropped. This is why the confirmation can report fewer competitors saved than you submitted — it only counts genuinely new competitors, and re-adding an existing competitor changes nothing.
✅ Correct format examples:
adthena.com
adthena.co.uk
adthena.com.au
❌ Avoid including:
adthena
adthena.COM
adthena.com/blog
blog.adthena.com
www.adthena.com
http://m.adthena.com
https://www.adthena.com/
Note: A newly created group can sit empty with no competitors and no location assigned — Export CSV stays greyed out until the group has at least one competitor. Once you add your first competitor, the group picks up that competitor's location and the table populates.
Edit a group
A group's table joins your account's relevant competitors with the group's competitors, so you see current competitors and likely candidates in one place. Search terms counts how many of your account's search terms that competitor competes on, and Overlap scores how strongly the competitor's activity overlaps your search terms. Both refresh once a day from the platform's daily data pipeline.
In standard groups, a facet narrows the rows by whether each competitor is in the group:
- All – every relevant competitor, those already in the group and those not, side by side
- In group – only the competitors already in the group
- Not in group – relevant competitors that are not in the group yet
Rows for competitors already in the group carry a selection checkbox and a Remove action. Rows for competitors not yet in the group are read-only context, and adds always go through the Add competitors dialog. The built-in tabs list competitors already in the group only, so the facet is hidden there.
Adding competitors:
- Click Add competitors, then add a single domain, paste multiple domains, or upload a CSV — all run through the same cleaning rules described above.
Removing competitors:
- Remove a single competitor with its row action; the row flips instantly and the table reconciles in the background.
- Tick several checkboxes to remove those competitors together with Remove selected.
- Remove all competitors from group clears the whole group, becoming Remove all matching while a text filter is active, removing only the competitors that match it.
- Every bulk remove asks you to confirm first because it cannot be undone.
Delete a group
Click Delete group in the top-right of the group's own page, or use the Delete (bin icon) next to it in the management table.
Important: Deleting a group, or removing its last remaining competitors so it would become empty, is refused while saved filters still reference the group.
Named Competitors group
The Named Competitors group is a built-in shortlist of the rivals you actively track. The platform treats these as your key competitors wherever competitors are highlighted throughout the application.
This group cannot be renamed or deleted, but you can manage its competitors from its own tab: click Add competitors to add domains, or use Remove all competitors from group / the row-level remove action to take them out. You can also Export CSV to download the full competitor list.
Ignored Competitors group
The Ignored Competitors group is a built-in list of domains you want left out of your competitive data — such as your own brands, resellers, or irrelevant sites.
Like Named Competitors, this group is built-in and cannot be renamed or deleted, but you can manage its competitors from its own tab using the same Add competitors, Remove, and Export CSV options.
Naming rules
A group name must be present, at most 100 characters, and unique among your groups; uniqueness ignores letter case, so two names differing only in capitalisation count as the same. A few forms are reserved for the platform. These are the exact messages you'll see if a name is rejected:
- Group name is required.
- Group name must be 100 characters or fewer.
- That name is reserved. Choose a name that is not "null" or "." and does not start with "[AI]".
